Women Wrestling - A Joy to Behold

You don't have to be a pervert to appreciate the spectacle of women vs. women wrestling. Although womens pro wrestling certainly exploits the male (and female, in many cases) gender's love of gazing upon the female form, there is more to mixed wrestling fans than that. They are in it also because it's damn fun entertainment, what with all the soap opera-esque elements included in the show from backstories, to betrayals and surprise friendships, it's a great joy to see these "differences" being settled in the ring through a good old fight, even if it is choreographed.

But pro wrestling is only one part of women's wrestling, the part that is most visible. What you see and hear less of is womens freestyle wrestling, which is purely competitive and tests women's skills as they face off against one another. A lot of these matches end up being mixed wrestling matches as it is still more rare to see women in wrestling than men, and sometimes female competitors have no choice but to wrestle men. As you might imagine, this has caused some controversy in a sport that has been male-dominated for as long as most people can remember.

Although only freestyle wrestling is a serious competitive sport and pro wrestling involves theatrics and orchestrated fights, both require optimum physical training. Freestyle wrestling is more demanding and how "buff" one looks is less important than the functionality of one's muscles, meaning, how well and how skillfully can you use your body? There is extensive running in training to build stamina, because a wrestler needs to have the endurance to get through what are usually very gruelling matches that really test one's limits. In womens pro wrestling, training is also needed but here appearance is probably as important as strength. Beyond the strength needed to execute moves like lifting an opponent over one's head to perform a bodyslam, you don't need as much speed as in freestyle wrestling because actions are timed to look authentic. That means an opponent will wait for you to execute a move. There are schools that train women to become pro wrestlers, and besides the usual repertoire budding wrestlers may also be taught acrobatics that are done to wow the crowd. Again, much of what pro wrestlers train in will be non-functional in a real wrestling match.

Don't dismiss womens pro wrestling as being fake just because the fights are planned; these wrestlers work very hard to put on a good show, just like any other entertainer worth their salt. Of course, if you prefer the real thing, check out the freestyle womens wrestling going on in high schools and colleges all over.
